This Saturday was a very special day. Not because it was a workday, but because it was the last day of the training and integration week. And this last day always stays in minds as the real beginning of the programs. Indeed, even if the kids are not here yet, the Khmer and European monitors meet for the first time, discover where they’ll be working during the coming month and above all, start to bond.

After having being told their projects on Monday evening, everyone left for Kep on Tuesday. Kep is a small seaside resort in the south of Cambodia, located between Kampot and the Vietnamese border. Every year it’s the occasion for the monitors to get to know each other better, to play a lot of games on the beach, and to learn more about what being a monitor for PSE actually means.

The first days in Phnom Penh are very exciting for everyone. The Welcome Committee’s people are the ones in charge of welcoming the new volunteers, not only at the airport, thanks to Richi and Miguel, but also in their very first steps in Cambodia. They are giving the best of themselves demonstrating the enthusiasm they feel for the country and the kids. This summer, the coordinator the Welcomes was Paty, and the responsibles were Ana, Helena, Thomas and Antonia. All of them make the School Continuity Program starts the best way.

There are only a few days left until our volunteers arrive in Phnom Penh. More than two hundred of them are preparing their trip from their country of origin: Spain, France, United Kingdom… It’s time to pack, organize the gifts to fit as many as possible, purchase the kit, sleeping bag, mat… And something that I’m sure they will not forget: the illusion.
